Piotr Borkowski



After graduating with distinction from F. Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw, where he studied conducting with Prof. Bogusław Madey, Piotr Bor­kowski went on to become assistant lecturer at the Academy’s Chair of Conducting. There he was awar­ded PhD in music. In the competition for the post of assistant conductor of Boston Symphony Orchestra, he qualified for the final stage, where he conducted the ensemble. Continued his conducting education with Hans Graf at the Wienner Meisterkurse für Musik in Vienna, and with Myung Whun Chung and Ilya Musin at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena, where he was awarded Diploma di Merito. In 1995, he received another Diploma di Merito, this time at Antonio Pedrotti International Conducting Competition in Trento. 

Artistic Director of Feliks Nowowiejski Phil­harmonic in Olsztyn (1991-1997), in 1994 he was awarded the post of guest professor of conducting at Keimyung University in Taegu (South Korea), and began a series of collaborations with the Taegu Philharmonic Orchestra. Between 1996 and 2001, he was professor of conducting at Taegu Hyosung Catholic University, and since 2001 – lecturer at University of Suwon College of Music, where he was Dean of Instrumental Dept. and taught courses in conducting. In 2006-2007, he conducted the Suwon Philharmonic Orchestra. He was also founder and artistic director of the Kyeonggi Festival Orchestra in South Korea (2008-2011). 

As conductor, Piotr Borkowski has worked in France, Italy, Germany, Sweden, USA, South Korea, Taiwan, China, the Ukraine, and collaborated with such ensembles, as the Boston Symphony, Berliner Symphoniker, Sofia Symphony, Dnepropetrovsk Philharmonic, Kosice “Janacek” Philharmonic, KBS Orchestra, Bucheon Philharmonic, Suwon Phil­harmonic Orchestra, Korean Chamber Orchestra, National Philharmonic Orchestra Warsaw, Natio­nal Symphony Orchestra of Polish Radio Katowice, Polish Radio Orchestra Warsaw, Capella Bydgostien­sis, Camerata Vistula, Jeunesses Musicales Chamber Orchestra, Orchestra Sinfonica di Roma. Has made several radio, TV and CD recordings for Polonia Records, Acte Préalable, Dux, Naxos, Musica Sacra Edition, and Centaur; several-time nominee for the “Fryderyk” Phonographic Academy Awards, he received the prize three times (2006, 2008 and 2011) in two categories: “Album of the Year – Contempo­rary Music” and “Most Outstanding Recordings of Polish Music”. 

Founder and Conductor of the Gorzów Philhar­monic Orchestra, in August 2010 Piotr Borkowski was appointed Artistic Director of Centrum Edu­kacji Artystycznej – Filharmonia Gorzowska (Cen­tre for Artistic Education, Gorzów Philharmonic).
